Responsibilities
Leading battery cell design

• Specification of all battery chemical related materials/elements, including:
• Electrolyte composition
• Active material composition
• Active material ratios
• Active material deposition methods
• separator composition
• Modeling projected performance characteristics based on specifications
• Specification of mechanical parameters that affect battery operation such as: active material dimensions and tolerances, active material characteristics (ie porosity, moisture content, etc), specification of battery formation and conditioning processes, prototype build oversight and characterization of new battery variants
• Document into doc control all specification of all electro-chemical related processes, materials, and components
  -Collaborating with various internal departments/teams as support
  • Work with internal procurement team to find and qualify suppliers that meet desired specifications
  • Work with design and test teams to specify DOE to accelerate development
  • Collaborate with test engineers to track and validate performance improvement variants and incorporate findings into battery design
  • Work with test engineers to translate qualification testing into manufacturing testing
  • Interface with vendors and stakeholders to attain specifications required to iterate on cell designs to achieve ultimate performance goals -
    Skills and Knowledge
    • Strong troubleshooting and failure analysis skills
    • Understanding of battery chemistry and electrochemical systems
    • Cell modeling via stoichiometric and electrochemical calculators
    • Exemplary verbal and written communication skills
    • Ability to manage shifting priorities and workloads
    • Ability to operate define and execute projects with minimal guidance
    • Familiarity with battery active material production tools and techniques
    • Familiarity with battery cell components, common failure modes, and architectural tradeoffs
    • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills
    • Basic understanding of mechanical properties of batteries to inform component decisions -Qualification and Experience -
      • 3+ years of experience in battery industry / cell development field
      • B.S. or M.S. in chemical engineering, materials science, or mechanical engineering
      • Knowledge or experience with battery cell design
      • Knowledge or experience with battery raw material production
      • Experience working closely with suppliers
      • Experience operating and interpreting data from battery cycling equipment like Maccor, Arbin, Neware, etc
      • Battery/cell teardown and failure analysis experience
      • Experience with MATLAB and Python is a plus
      • Experience working with and managing technicians
