Supervising Attorney - Access to Justice Initiative, Catholic Charities
Catholic Charities' connection to the immigrant and refugee community has a long history and today is as extensive as it is deep, serving 28,000 immigrants and refugees each year through legal, resettlement, integration, ESL, clinical, family reunification, and removal defense services. Their legal team provides legal consultations, representation and assistance to documented and undocumented newcomers of all nationalities, ethnicities and religions. They represent clients in straight-forward and complex immigration cases, and engage in removal defense. They anchor their work in the communities we serve, respond holistically to our clients' needs, and endeavor to provide a strong voice as an advocate for our clients and communities.Position:
This role will carry a caseload consisting of complex immigration and removal defense cases. Will supervisejunior attorneys and migration counselors, including DOJ accredited representatives and will spearhead, train, mentorand provide representation as part of the department's Access to Justice initiative to develop expertise on immigrationconsequences of criminal convictions.Responsibilities:

• Screening, advising, and representing individuals, detained and non-detained, facing removal proceedings or other immigration-related federal litigation matters, including, but not limited to: cancellation of removal, asylum, bond hearings, SIJ, BIA appeals (and federal appeals practice under supervision and upon approval), etc.
• Counseling and representing individuals in more specialized and complex immigration applications including, but not limited to: SIJ petitions, VAWA petitions, U and T visa applications, deferred action, inadmissibility waivers, etc.
• Supervising, advising and mentoring attorneys and migration counselors, monitoring quality of legal work, ensuring delivery of legal services, monitoring compliance with reporting requirements, and providing support as needed in cases including, but not limited to: family reunification (adjustment of status), visa extension and change of status, religious worker, naturalization, green card extension, travel/advance parole, special adjustment relief (NACARA, HRIFA, Cuban Adjustment Act), etc. Providing representation for cases arising from work of migration counselors and accredited representatives. Monitoring the work of supervisees through LawLogix reminders, site visits, periodic file review, etc.
• Lead Access to Justice initiative:
• Develop and conduct in-house trainings on reading/interpreting certificates of disposition, the effects of criminal convictions on immigration status or eligibility for immigration and naturalization benefits, bond hearings, LPR cancellation, etc.
• Provide mentorship and support to legal staff on issues involving immigration consequences of criminal convictions by advising staff on the consequences of convictions; second-seating at bond hearings and other court hearings; representing ILS clients with criminal issues at USCIS interviews; drafting and/or reviewing briefs, RFE responses and cover letters that address immigration consequences of criminal convictions; advising our clients' criminal defense counsel on getting the most advantageous plea deals for our clients, etc.
• Representation, as needed, in cases of migration counselors;
• Providing in-house and outreach trainings, presentations and workshops, as directed.
• Maintaining and updating case files and case management database.
• Compiling monthly statistics and reports.Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor.
  • Two to three years of post-JD experience in immigration law, representing clients in affirmative benefits applications to USCIS or in removal defense, with experience in the area of immigration consequences of criminal convictions, strongly preferred.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Admission to a bar of any state and/or the District of Columbia; admission to the New York bar strongly preferred.
  • Bilingual in English and a 2nd language preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and computer skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
