The South Texas Pro Bono Asylum Representation Project (ProBAR) empowers immigrants through high-quality legal education, representation, and connections to services. ProBAR serves immigrants in the Rio Grande Valley border region with a particular focus on the legal needs of adults and unaccompanied children in federal custody.Position:The ABA recruits employees seeking opportunities for challenging and substantive work defending liberty and pursuing justice in the U.S. and around the world. Accountable for facilitating pro bono representation of detained unaccompanied child respondents in immigration removal proceedings, including by providing direct representation as required or permitted by current funding contract(s).Responsibilities:Provides direct representation to detained or locally released immigrants as required or permitted by current funding contract(s)Reviews legal screenings conducted by shelter services departments and reviews and assigns follow-up services, including additional interviewing, referrals to other legal services providers and advocates, or in- house representationRegularly appears in immigration court to represent clients in removal proceedings and to act as Friend of Court for other detained youth as appropriateAssists with tracking and developing legal training needs for legal and shelter services department staffAccesses, processes, and ensures the confidentiality and control of client informationMonitors case activities and maintains the data integrity of case management systemsPerforms other related duties as requiredQualifications:Basic:Possession of a Juris Doctorate degree from an ABA-accredited law schoolLicensed to practice law in a U.S. state or territory or Accreditation, as required in order to appear as representative before immigration courtFluency in English and Spanish in written and spoken forms.Preferred Qualifications:Licensed to practice law and member in good standing of State Bar of TexasPrior volunteer, community, or work experience regarding immigration or detentionPrior work experience with children, particularly from Central America and including Mayan language-speaking populationsPrior non-profit experience, particularly involving field work or work in remote locationsHow to Apply:To apply for this position, or for more information, click here.SDL2017
