LG Electronics North America Innovation Center

LG Electronics recently established North America Innovation Center (NAIC) in Santa Clara, California, USA., with an ambitious vision to become the nerve center of global innovation. Aiming to create the future of LG with the focus on disruptive and exponential growth, NAIC works with global corporations, startups, governments, and technology stakeholders to create new businesses, establish strategic partnerships, and develop a broad ecosystem using the process of "outside-in" innovation.

Position Summary

Sr. Director of Grand Challenges and Ecosystem Development

LG is seeking a Sr. Director of Grand Challenges and Ecosystem Development to work at North America Innovation Center (NAIC). Reporting to the Head of NAIC, this position will play a key role in unlocking LG's growth and will work on building an innovation ecosystem of startups, global tech companies, venture capitals, private equities, universities, government agencies, and relevant non-profit organizations through a challenge program. Based on NAIC's "outside-in" innovation process, this position will plan, execute, and manage a global innovation challenge program to build an innovation ecosystem led by LG and other co-sponsors/investors. This position will be responsible for all aspects of the challenge program including hosting annual global events, leading PR and marketing activities for the challenge including website development/management, leading regional activities to engage stakeholders everywhere in the world including the US, Europe, and Asia. This position will lead the process to solicit, evaluate, select, and sign agreements with multiple contractors/outside organizations to execute the plan, and will manage/lead the contractors and outside organizations. This position will be responsible for catalyzing the all types of stakeholders and mobilizing a large number of participants to join our challenge program and having them share ideas to combine their products, services, or other offerings to work with LG to create new business opportunities. This position will also be responsible for collecting and organizing data from participants, and producing documentation/materials to be used for the challenge, as well as putting together annual reports on the progress of our ecosystem development effort. This position will help NAIC's EIRs (Entrepreneur-In-Residence) and external partners to develop business cases, and will also work with NAIC's investment experts to establish a coalition of external investors and global tech companies that will co-sponsor NAIC's innovation process.

Rolls and Responsibilities:

Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:

* Plan, execute, and manage a global innovation challenge program to build an innovation ecosystem led by LG and other co-sponsors/investors. * Lead the grand challenges and ecosystem development team. * Lead the process to solicit, evaluate, select, and sign agreements with multiple contractors/outside organizations to execute the plan. Manage/lead the contractors and outside organizations. * Host annual global events and regional events. * Lead PR and marketing activities for the challenge program including website management, SNS, newsletter, etc., for the challenge. * Plan and execute regional activities (including regional events and workshops) to engage stakeholders around the world including the US, Europe, Asia, etc. * Collecting and organizing data/submissions from participants, and work with NAIC's strategy team to analyze the data. * Develop documents, presentations, materials to be used for the challenge. * Produce annual progress reports of our ecosystem development effort. * Help NAIC's EIRs (Entrepreneur-In-Residence) and external partners to develop business cases. * Work with NAIC's investment team to establish a coalition of external co-investors that will partner with NAIC in its innovation process. * Metric of success will include (but not limited to) the quantity and quality of the participants pursuing business collaboration with LG and other co-sponsors of the challenge program, the quality/quantity of projects EIRs collaborate with the challenge participants, and the level of global reputation and enthusiasm/buzz created by the challenge program around the world.

Key qualifications:

* BS in engineering or business/economics or related field. * 15+ years' experience in tech companies, governments, non-profits on ecosystem development, partnership management, business development, or relevant areas. * Experience of creating or managing a large scale global challenge/competition programs. (>300 participating entities) * Experience of developing one or more business or innovation ecosystems through multi-party partnerships or challenge programs * Deep understanding of open innovation, new business creation, and business incubation processes. * Experience of hosting or managing large-scale global tech events including PR and marketing activities for the events with the goal to catalyze and mobilize innovation stakeholders. * Great verbal communications skills, both in public and private settings. * Excellent written communication skills and organizational skills. * Existing relationships and connections with major tech innovation organizations. * Ability to catalyze and motivate all types of innovation stakeholders (startups, global tech companies, universities, governments, non-profits) to join forces and collaborate to create disruptive innovation. * Fluency in English is a must. * Broad understanding of technology around SW, HW, cloud, and System engineering. * Last but not least, entrepreneurial mindset with bias for action in highly ambiguous environments - enjoys making sense of white space

Preferences:

* Familiarity with outside-in innovation processes. * Experience in product management, product marketing, corporate strategy is a plus. * Experience in a startup is a plus. * Experience with business and technical requirements analysis * Master or MBA

Location

This position will be located in California. Travel may be up to 20~40%
