The Division of Infectious Diseases and Geographic Medicine ,
within Stanford University, Department of Medicine is seeking a
Life Science Research Professional II to perform more complex
functions and activities involved in defined research projects, and
independently conduct a portion of the research project(s).
Studies in our lab are driven by the hypothesis that IgG repertoire
diversity is a central driver of heterogeneity in human immune
functioning and susceptibility to diseases. We are specifically
interested in diversity that exists in the Fc domain repertoire
among people, which we define by serum IgG subclass and Fc
glycoform distributions. We have found that the Fc domain
repertoire of an individual impacts key immune processes such as
vaccine responses and susceptibility to antibody-dependent
enhancement of dengue disease (Wang TT, Cell. 2015 and Wang TT,
Science. 2017). This is because IgG subclasses and Fc glycoforms
dictate the structure of Fc domains within immune complexes that
form during vaccination or infection. This, in turn, determines the
affinity of immune complexes for various Fc receptors on effector
cells. Thus, our research seeks to define how the Fc domain
repertoire of an individual determines the quality of effector cell
responses that can be recruited during immune activation.
- Independently conduct a portion of the research project(s).
Make recommendations on experimental design and/or research
direction to principal investigator.
- Independently conduct complex (lab and/or field) experiments to
gather data for a portion of a major research project.
- Interpret and analyze results, often where few guidelines
exist, and make modifications to existing procedures and
- Develop new research protocols where appropriate protocols are
not described in the literature or where modification or adaptation
of standard procedures and protocols is required.
- Participate in multidisciplinary teams across different
faculties or schools.
- Perform ongoing literature review to remain current with new
procedures and related research; apply to ongoing research and
development of new protocols.
- Contribute substantively to the preparation of papers for
publication, especially in the results section, and to publication
of findings. Present ongoing work to colleagues and/or academic
- Oversee supply and equipment budget under supervision of
principal investigator or business manager.
- Work with health and safety department to ensure lab complies
with regulations and all required trainings.
- Supervise (either formally or informally) staff or students as
needed, including oversight and direction on techniques, as well as
consultation on project work. Serve as a technical resource for
other research staff.
- Oversee the daily activities of the laboratory including lab
maintenance; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and
safety records, and provide general lab support as needed. May
assist with purchasing laboratory equipment. The job duties listed

- A Master's degree in biology, immunology, biochemistry,
bioengineering, molecular biology or related field.
- Experience and proficiency with basic methods of molecular
biology (PCR, cloning, Western blots), cell culture and experience
with in vivo systems will be important for this position.
- 5+ years laboratory experience, or equivalent.
- Proficiency in cloning and protein production.
- Experience with mouse models of virus infection including
malaria, influenza and/or dengue.
- Experience with scientific writing.
- Experience with tissue culture-based virus growth, titer
assays, and neutralization assays.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
- Bachelor's degree in related scientific field and two years of
relevant work experience; or Master's degree in a related
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
- Comprehensive understanding of scientific principles.
- General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master
computer programs, databases, and scientific applications.
- Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.
