The Opportunity:

Picarro is seeking a Sr. Systems Engineer to participate and drive the development of the next generation of laser-based analytical instrumentation. The incumbent will typically lead teams to create instruments capable of highly sensitive and accurate measurements of volatile organic compounds. The Sr. Systems Engineer will be expected to be able to create timelines and include dependencies on other projects, and should have at least a year of mentoring or running a group of scientist or engineers. These novel and transformative instruments your team creates will be deployed in a variety of applications, from semiconductor manufacturing to industrial emissions monitoring to air quality. The incumbent will work with the marketing team to understand the customer needs and will participate in the design, assembly, and performance testing of CRDS instrumentation that will fulfill those needs. As a Sr. Systems Engineer, your experience will be used to fill in gaps in specifications as necessary. To that end, experience with analytical instrumentation and optical spectroscopy is absolutely required. Strong experimental and data analysis skills are required.



Key Responsibilities:

• 
  
• Develop a deep understanding of the design and operation of Picarro's sophisticated CRDS instruments.
  
• Use that understanding to plan and execute on a comprehensive development program to develop and manufacture trace gas analyzers that enable our customers' applications.
  
• Divide multi-faceted projects into sub-teams, fun mini-scrums with those teams, coordinate a scrum-of-scrums over the entire project.
  
• Proactively identify and mitigate development risks and troubleshoot problems and defects.
  
• Become a key technical resource to streamline the transfer of the technology into the Picarro product portfolio.
  
• Follow standard engineering practices, including risk analysis, design review, requirements definition, and product cost management, and mange the timeline, resources, and budget associated with the project.
  
• Design products for industry standard performance, reliability, manufacturability, scalability, and serviceability.
  
• Design and build apparatus to test and develop new instruments, writing code as necessary for data workup or test station control.
  
• Collaborate with other system engineers, optical designers, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, software engineers, and process/manufacturing engineers to deliver system level solutions.
  
  
  
  
  Qualifications:
  
  
  • 
    
  • M.S. or Ph.D., preferred in Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Physical Chemistry or related field.
    
  • Experience with spectroscopy is required; gas phase spectroscopy is preferred.
    
  • Experience with conducting experiments and developing scientific instruments in a laboratory or industrial context.
    
  • Experience with developing software to interface with and control laboratory equipment is a plus.
    
  • Ability to work cross functional boundaries and organizational levels both inside and outside the company.
    
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    
  • Extremely organized, quality and detail oriented, with an ability to multi-task in a high growth environment.
    
  • Data Visualization and Analysis skills required. Basic fluency in programming (Python, Matlab, R, IGOR, etc.) for Data Analysis strongly preferred.
    
  • Experience in optical absorption spectroscopy, laser-based instrumentation, gas phase physics desired.
    
    
    Salary & Benefits:
    
    The base salary range for this full-time position is $124,000 - $155,000. Your base salary and title will be determined based on the location, experience, qualification, skills, and knowledge, level, and pay of other employees in similar positions.
